Introduction
The Blenders Cut cask finish editions of Two Stacks whiskeys are the exact same whiskey as the First Cut editions as far as I am aware, further matured in select finishing casks. So that would make the initial components all whiskeys from GND as follows:
- 40% Dark Grain – Virgin Oak cask matured
- 40% Light Grain – Bourbon cask matured
- 8% Pot Still – Oloroso sherry butt matured
- 10% Double-distilled Malt – Bourbon cask matured
- 2% Peated Malt – Bourbon cask matured
Finished then in Sauternes casks for just 45 days. Sauternes being a French dessert wine, revered for its sweet, round character bottled at an eye-watering 63.5% cask strength, only 222 bottles produced initially.
Color
Gold with a distinct orange hue.
Nose (Aromas)
Youthful spirit with a vibrant sweet grain character, bourbon notes shining through with vanilla and spice. It’s quite light and herbaceous with a little touch mint and aniseed.
Palate & Finish
The palate starts quite relaxed with notes of pear and apple but then this wondrous smoky character takes over. It’s like burning hay & newspapers under a bath of citrus oils and the room is filling with aroma. There’s light vanilla and charred wood texture as well.
Verdict
While not overly complex and probably a bit youthful, I’d guess that given more time in cask it would continue to improve. It’s certainly not aggressive at the high abv and I have to admit that I find that really distinct smoky character rather delightful.
